London

Well, we weren’t planning on staying in London, but travel is crazy, I guess! Vance and I booked our one-way tickets 5 months in advance, and we were pretty proud of our savvy, deal-making ways. Some of you probably heard me brag about how cheaply you could get to Europe. Well, the joke was on us, because we inadvertently booked both legs of our trip for the same day–and we figured it out just the day before we left. Hello, stress!

It was actually a good opportunity to start out at the beginning in a more flexible, let’s-make-lemonade-out-of-lemons kind of way. So much of life away from home is unpredictable, and we began our trip with exactly that.

It was an expensive, expensive mistake–one I will work hard never to repeat–but the kids had really wanted to see London, and we were able to give them a day there. I was proud of them–they overcame jet lag and really stuck with me, navigating the Underground, hop on hop off tours, and crazy windy/cold weather like champs. I was proud of me, too, because once we got to the little flat we had rented for the night, it just felt safer to stay and rest. It’s hard to get over the inertia of safety. But I faked being the adult, and in the end, the kids and I had a great time.

Vance had to rest the whole time, and it was hard not to worry that extending our travel would hurt him. I am so grateful to the Lord that he made it through.
